ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The Pueblan Milk Snake is a vividly coloured Mexican subspecies recognised for its alternating red, black and cream bands. The clean, high-contrast tricolour pattern makes it one of the most visually distinctive members of the milk snake complex.

In its native range it inhabits semi-arid scrub, farmland margins and rocky hillsides, spending much of its time concealed beneath debris or within burrows. It is primarily terrestrial but will explore low structures when provided. Compared with larger rat snakes, this subspecies remains moderately sized and is well suited to a standard adult vivarium. A secure enclosure is important, as milk snakes are capable escape artists and will investigate small gaps.
