ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Rhacodactylus leachianus is the largest living gecko species and one of the most distinctive reptiles from the forests of New Caledonia. It is a heavy-bodied arboreal gecko with loose, textured skin and mottled camouflage that closely resembles tree bark. This natural pattern allows it to blend almost perfectly into trunks and branches during the day.

The species is primarily crepuscular, becoming most active at dusk and during the night when it moves through trees in search of food. In the wild its diet includes insects, fruit and nectar, which is why modern captive diets often combine live prey with formulated fruit-based gecko foods.

Leachianus geckos spend most of their time above ground, sheltering inside hollows, cork bark and dense foliage. Their strong build and large head give them a powerful bite compared with most geckos, and they are known for their deep croaking vocalisations. Depending on the island locality, individuals can vary greatly in colour, pattern and overall size.
