ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Western hognose snakes are compact, fossorial colubrids built for life in loose soils. The upturned rostral “shovel” snout isn’t just a look , it’s what lets them burrow efficiently and disappear under the substrate. In a well-set-up enclosure you’ll often see them surface to explore, then dive back down to tunnel and rest.

They’re also famous for dramatic defence behaviours: flattening the neck, hissing, bluff-striking, and (if pushed) turning over to “play dead”.

In the wild they’re found across dry prairies, sandy grasslands and other open habitats, which is why a secure enclosure with plenty of substrate depth and a dry-leaning environment suits them so well.
