Product Information
Scientific Name: Hydrosaurus celebensis
Source: WC
Adult Size: Up to 90–100cm total length, including the long tail
Native Range: Sulawesi and surrounding Indonesian islands
Enclosure: A custom-built Viperia PVC vivarium sized to suit — use the Vivarium Calculator to spec the right dimensions. Adults require an exceptionally large, tall enclosure with robust climbing branches, a deep humid substrate such as coconut fibre or topsoil, a substantial basking zone, and access to a large water feature or deep water dish for soaking — these are semi-aquatic lizards that swim readily in the wild.
Heating: Basking spot of 38–42°C, ambient air temperature of 26–30°C, with a night-time drop to around 22–24°C
Humidity: 70–85%; achieved through regular misting, a large water feature, and a moisture-retaining substrate — good ventilation is essential to prevent stagnant conditions
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask 25–35cm from the lamp — these are diurnal (day-active) open-sun baskers from tropical riverbanks and require strong UV exposure to thrive
Diet: Omnivorous with a strong lean toward plant matter — offer a varied mix of leafy greens, flowers, fruits, and vegetables daily, supplemented with appropriately sized insects (locusts, roaches, crickets) several times per week. Juveniles tend to take proportionally more insect protein; adults shift toward a more plant-heavy diet. Dust all feeder insects with a quality calcium and vitamin D3 supplement
ABOUT THIS SPECIES
The Sulawesi Sailfin Dragon (Hydrosaurus celebensis) is one of the most visually spectacular lizards in the hobby — males develop an extraordinary sail-like crest along the tail, supported by elongated vertebral spines, that gives the species its name and makes it look genuinely prehistoric. Native to the lush riverine forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, these lizards are semi-aquatic (equally at home on land and in water) and are typically found basking on branches and rocks overhanging rivers and streams.
Sailfin Dragons are a rewarding but genuinely demanding species best suited to experienced keepers who can commit to providing a very large, carefully managed enclosure with high humidity, strong UVB, and a varied diet. With patient, consistent handling from a young age they can become reasonably tolerant of human interaction, though they are naturally alert and athletic animals that appreciate space to explore and climb above all else.
