ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Horsefield tortoises are compact, tough little Testudo from arid steppe and semi-desert regions across Central Asia. They’re built for extremes: in the wild they spend long periods sheltering underground, and captive animals often show the same strong urge to burrow and wedge themselves into tight hides.

Compared with many Mediterranean tortoises, they tend to be more “on the move” when conditions suit them, patrolling their space and investigating anything edible. Their rounded, slightly flattened shell and sturdy limbs (with the characteristic “four-clawed” look) suit a life over dry ground and loose soils.

A set-up that prioritises floor space, ventilation, and digging opportunities usually brings out the most natural behaviour.
