ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The Great Plains Rat snake is a slender North American colubrid closely related to the better-known corn snake. It typically displays a light grey or sandy background colour with darker brown blotches running along the back and sides, providing effective camouflage in open grassland and scrub habitats.

In the wild, this species ranges across prairies, rocky outcrops and semi-arid regions, often sheltering in rodent burrows or beneath surface cover. It is both terrestrial and semi-arboreal, making use of low branches and ledges when available. Its moderate adult size and adaptable nature make it a practical choice for a well-secured vivarium setup that offers both floor space and light climbing structure.
