Product Information
Scientific Name: Hydrosaurus microlophus
Source: WC
Adult Size: Up to 90–100cm total length, including tail
Native Range: Sulawesi, Indonesia
Enclosure: A custom-built Viperia PVC vivarium sized to suit — use the Vivarium Calculator to spec the right dimensions. Sailfin dragons are large, active, semi-arboreal lizards (meaning they spend time both in trees and on the ground) and need a spacious enclosure with substantial height for climbing as well as floor space for movement. Furnish with robust branches and cork bark for climbing, dense foliage for cover, a deep substrate that holds moisture, and a large, sturdy basking platform positioned directly under the heat and UVB source.
Heating: Basking spot of 40-45°C; ambient air temperature of 27–30°C; a night-time drop to around 22–24°C is well tolerated.
Humidity: 70–85%; achieved through daily misting, a large water feature or waterfall, and a moisture-retaining substrate such as coco coir or topsoil mix. Good ventilation is essential to prevent stagnant air despite the high humidity.
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask within 25–35cm of the lamp. Sulawesi sailfin dragons are highly diurnal (active during daylight) baskers native to bright, open riparian environments, and require strong UV exposure to metabolise calcium correctly and thrive long-term.
Diet: Omnivores with a strong leaning toward plant matter — offer a varied mix of leafy greens (collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion), vegetables, and fruit as the dietary bulk, supplemented with live insects (locusts, roaches, crickets) two to three times per week. Juveniles require proportionally more insect protein to support growth. Dust food items with a calcium supplement at most feeds and a multivitamin supplement once or twice a week.
ABOUT THIS SPECIES
The Sulawesi Sailfin Dragon is one of the most visually spectacular lizards available in the reptile hobby — adult males develop a striking sail-like crest along the back and tail, and the species is native to the lush, humid riverine forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where individuals are typically found basking on rocks and branches overhanging fast-flowing water. Their sheer size and prehistoric appearance make them one of the most impressive displays of any lizard keeper's collection.
Sailfin dragons are best suited to experienced keepers who can commit to a large, carefully maintained enclosure and consistent daily husbandry — they are sensitive to suboptimal conditions but reward attentive owners with bold, active behaviour and striking good looks. Juveniles can be flighty and defensive, though individuals that are handled regularly and given a well-structured environment will generally settle into calmer, more confident animals over time.
