Product Information
Scientific Name: Teratoscincus scincus
Source: WC
Adult Size: 15–20cm (6–8 inches)
Native Range: Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Iran, Afghanistan, and northwestern China; inhabits sandy desert and semi-arid plains
Enclosure: A minimum 90×45×45cm Viperia PVC vivarium, set up with a deep layer of fine sand or sand/soil mix to allow natural burrowing, a warm cork hide at the hot end, a slightly cooler hide at the cool end, and minimal décor to reflect the open desert environment
Heating: Basking spot of 30-35°C, ambient cool-end temperature of 25–28°C, with a night-time drop to 18–22°C; use a thermostat-controlled heat mat or low-wattage basking lamp combined with a deep substrate to allow thermal regulation
Humidity: Keep the main enclosure dry at 20–30% ambient humidity to replicate arid desert conditions; a small localised damp area within one hide can be maintained slightly higher at around 40–50% to aid shedding
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width; although primarily nocturnal (active after dark), wonder geckos benefit from low-level UVB exposure during crepuscular activity periods — position the tube so the animal can benefit at a distance of around 20–30cm
Diet: Live invertebrates including crickets, locusts, mealworms, and occasional waxworms as a treat; adults feed every 2–3 days, juveniles every 1–2 days; dust all feeders with a quality calcium and vitamin supplement at each feeding
ABOUT THIS SPECIES
The Common Wonder Gecko is a fascinating and visually striking desert gecko native to the sandy plains and semi-arid dunes of Central Asia, where wild populations have been recorded across a broad range of sandy biotopes in countries such as Kazakhstan and Iran. They are best known for their extraordinarily large, fish-like scales — an unusual trait among geckos — and their remarkable ability to shed patches of skin when handled too roughly, a natural defensive adaptation that makes them better suited to observational keeping than regular handling.
Wonder geckos are an excellent choice for intermediate keepers with an interest in arid-species husbandry, and they reward patient observation with plenty of interesting nocturnal (night-time) behaviour including burrowing and active foraging. They are not a hands-on pet, but their unique appearance and manageable size make them a genuinely captivating addition to any reptile collection.
