ABOUT THIS SPECIES

“Coal” is a hobby trade label used for especially dark Western hognoses, usually aiming for deeper greys/browns and heavier overall contrast. Because naming isn’t standardised across breeders, it’s best treated as a look/line descriptor unless supported by clear parentage details. Underneath, it’s still classic Heterodon nasicus: a compact, ground-dwelling burrower with a shovel-like nose that loves tunnelling and wedging into snug hides. With deep substrate and good cover, many become regular edge-cruisers and are most visible in the late afternoon and around feeding routines. The 66% het Axanthic note is a probability rather than a visual trait—there’s a 2-in-3 chance this snake carries Axanthic unless it’s proven by breeding or verified parent records.
