ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Varanus salvator is one of the largest monitor lizard species and is widely distributed throughout South and Southeast Asia.

Asian Water Monitors are highly adaptable reptiles found in a wide range of habitats including mangroves, riverbanks, wetlands and forest edges. They are powerful swimmers and frequently remain close to water, using rivers, ponds and flooded areas as both refuge and hunting grounds.

This species has a long muscular body, strong limbs and a laterally compressed tail that aids in swimming. In the wild it feeds on a wide variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, insects and small vertebrates. Their intelligence, size and semi-aquatic nature make them one of the most physically impressive monitor species encountered in captivity, requiring substantial space and a robust enclosure design to accommodate their natural behaviour.
