ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The California Kingsnake is a hardy North American colubrid known for its bold banded or striped patterning, most commonly in contrasting black and cream. Wild individuals show considerable variation across their range, and this adaptability is reflected in their straightforward captive care.

In nature, they occupy a wide spread of habitats from coastal scrub to semi-arid grassland and woodland. They are opportunistic feeders and active foragers, often found sheltering under cover objects or within rodent burrows. Their manageable adult size and tolerance of a range of environmental conditions have made them a long-established species in UK collections. A secure enclosure is important, as they are strong and inquisitive snakes prone to testing gaps and weak fittings.
